The noise of reactors and the silence of the salt storage: SPOLCHEMIE inspired a Polish artist

An extraordinary art project has connected the industrial environment of our chemical plant with the world of modern art. Polish composer Jacek Doroszenko created a unique sound composition titled Resin Arpeggio, crafted from sounds captured directly within SPOLCHEMIE’s facilities. This musical piece can currently be heard in only one place in the world: at the House of Arts in Ústí nad Labem, and only until November 23, 2024.

“The main goal was to capture the characteristic sound ecosystem of chemical production,” explains Lenka Pospíšilová from SPOLCHEMIE’s marketing team, who was directly involved in the recording. “Composer Jacek Doroszenko focused on the sounds of machines, pipes, and production processes, as well as on how these sounds travel through space, creating their own musical structures.” The recording took place under the expert guidance of Jan Krtička and Adéla Machová from the Faculty of Art and Design at UJEP during a single day in July. With specialized microphones, they captured a diverse range of sounds—from noisy reactors mixing reaction mixtures to the quiet spaces of the salt storage area and the ambient sounds of laboratory reactions. “This project allows us to present SPOLCHEMIE from a different perspective,” continues Lenka Pospíšilová, who says the artists aimed to portray the chemical plant as a place where technology and art meet. This unconventional view of the industrial environment also captivated the artist, along with the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable development and environmental consideration. The resulting sound composition can be heard at the House of Arts in Ústí nad Labem until November 23, 2024. The creators are also considering releasing the piece on cassette at a London studio.
