Epoxy poured floors for functional and design solutions

What is a poured epoxy floor?

Cast epoxy flooring is a type of flooring in which an epoxy system is used to finish the surfaces of concrete floor structures.

Where are epoxy poured floors used?

Epoxy floors are ideal for a variety of industrial and commercial environments due to their durability and excellent properties. You will often find them in high traffic areas such as manufacturing facilities, warehouses, underground garages and parking garages. At the same time, they offer various processing options and adaptation of properties to special requirements, so they are also used in residential buildings, offices, hospitals or power plants – simply wherever floors must be not only functional but also beautiful or require special treatment (anti-static, anti-slip, etc.). Thanks to the possibility of designing epoxy floors, you can also find them in galleries, cafés, restaurants or showrooms. Cast epoxy floors can be used after careful surface preparation even where the surface is damaged (cracks, scratches, mechanical damage, slight unevenness).

What are the advantages of epoxy floors?

Cast epoxy floors create a uniform smooth surface and offer several advantages:

STRENGTH AND DURABILITY

Epoxy resins are very strong and can withstand high loads, making them ideal even for highly stressed industrial floors, where they provide durability, significantly extend service life and reduce the need for repairs and renovations.

RESISTANCE

Epoxies are resistant to most chemicals, making them suitable for areas such as laboratories, chemical and pharmaceutical production or hospitals.

EASY MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

Thanks to the seamless design, epoxy floors are easy to maintain and give no room for mould growth or microbial growth. If surface repair is already necessary, it can be done easily and at minimal cost.

NON-SLIP SURFACE

In addition to smooth surfaces, epoxy floors offer a wide range of options for creating a slip-resistant surface. By sprinkling silica sand of different fractions, the surface roughness can be achieved exactly according to the customer’s requirements.

ATTRACTIVE APPEARANCE

Although epoxy floors are often synonymous with the grey floor in a garage or industrial hall, today they are also used by designers around the world to create original and attractive floors in representative spaces such as galleries, cafes, hotels, showrooms, etc.

How are epoxy floors applied?

The basis for the durability and long life of epoxy flooring is the preparation of the concrete subfloor. The concrete surface must be firm, clean, dry and insulated from ground moisture, and the new concrete must be mature. If the surface is damaged (incoherent parts, hollowed out, uneven) or dirty (oil, diesel, etc.), the floor must be sanded or scrubbed (with steel balls, sand or high-pressure cleaner).

An epoxy primer is applied to the prepared concrete surface. This serves to anchor the dust particles, displace air from the surface, reduce and unify surface absorption and create an adhesion bridge for perfect anchoring of the subsequent layer.

The self-levelling epoxy mixture (epoxy system) is applied to the foamed and cured surface using a tooth trowel, the entire surface is then rolled with a hedgehog roller to better release the mixed air from the poured mass. If the customer wishes, the surface can be provided with a sprinkling of decorative chips followed by repainting with a colourless epoxy varnish.

Epoxy floors can have small or larger thicknesses (0.3 – 3 mm). The individual mixing ratios and the processing procedure for the components of the epoxy systems are described in the application sheets.

Floor solutions made of SPOLCHEMIE®

SPOLCHEMIE® products have been known on the market for decades for their quality and durability. You may even find that the product name SADURIT® has become synonymous with epoxy coating for concrete floors.

The SPOLCHEMIE® portfolio includes products for complex solutions for concrete as well as wooden floors. Whether it’s a high-stress industrial floor or an attractive coloured floor, products from SPOLCHEMIE® are the right choice.

The universal solvent-free epoxy system EPOSTYL® 521-01 has been developed for highly stressed floors in industrial and production areas, shops, garages, parking garages and warehouses. It is a coloured system that can be applied in thinner or thicker layers and has increased UV resistance. The slip-free nature of the floor is created simply by adding sand. EPOSTYL® 521 FLEX is a flexible version of the product and has been specially developed for waterproofing and bridging cracks in areas without a requirement for UV stability and high aesthetic value.

SADURIT® Z1 solvent-borne coloured epoxy system is applied in a thin layer and provides excellent chemical and mechanical resistance. Its properties make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

EPOSTYL® 521-180 AS and the final self-levelling coloured system EPOSTYL® 521-01 AS (solvent-free) is a specially developed composition for antistatic floors. It is used wherever protection against static electricity and the requirement for static charge dissipation from the surface is necessary (in operating rooms, hospitals, dental surgeries, electronic equipment manufacturing, places with explosion hazards).

In addition to products for industrial areas, SPOLCHEMIE® also offers products for decorative purposes. Decorative epoxy poured floors are not only beautiful, but combine an attractive appearance with excellent protection – they are resistant to mechanical damage and chemicals and have a long service life. They find their application especially in spaces where a functional and aesthetic solution is needed – studios, showrooms, car showrooms, cafes, apartments, bathrooms, etc. EPOSTYL® 521-01 is ideal for coloured poured floors and offers a choice of RAL shades, while EPOSTYL® GRANIT provides an attractive textured granite (marble) look. A separate chapter is the possibility of pouring smaller objects into epoxy systems.

In addition to epoxy poured floors, SPOLCHEMIE® also offers epoxy systems for floor coatings and repairs, systems for priming and systems for stone carpet.
